The America Camellia Society chapter Coastal Carolina holds its 71st flower show competition on Saturday, January 25, 2020, at the Danny Jones Armory Complex in North Charleston, South Carolina. The show is free and open to the public from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Locals and novices are invited to bring blooms for entry between 7:00 and 10:00 a.m. Judging begins at 10:00 a.m.
The 2020 event marks a new era for the long-running flower show, with a change in venue and reinvigorated leadership. Traditionally held at Citadel Mall for decades, recent modifications to the mall precipitated the move to Danny Jones Armory Complex. Tony Smith, show chairman, and Christine Andrews, president, take the helm this year, following in the footsteps of former president and show chairman, Darren Sherriff.
“We are looking forward to hosting the show at a new venue,” says Smith, whose goals are to renew overall interest in the show, expand membership locally, increase out-of-region participants, and attract sponsors. In the future, she wants to add arts educational opportunities for youth, high school, and collegiate students.
“As a group, we want to have the most fun, memorable, and largest camellia flower show in the Southeast,” Smith says. “Charleston was the first home of camellias in North America. It is only fitting that we lead the way in which our flower shows are done.”
