Destination Chic: Pineapples, Palms, Etc.

Sisters Lisa Peterson and Shelly Bascetta opened a tiny design shop in Jupiter, Florida, 20 years ago. Today it’s a must-stop emporium for sophisticated coastal style

Tucked away in a nondescript South Florida shopping center is an interiors shop that sells more than just merchandise. Rather, Pineapples, Palms, Etc. presents a wholly formed aesthetic that speaks to an elegant but relaxed lifestyle with a coastal accent.

When sisters Lisa Peterson and Shelly Bascetta started their business, the rage at the time, especially in Florida, was everything Tommy Bahama and Ernest Hemingway–inspired Key West style. New to the market, Peterson and Bascetta had to earn their merchandising chops. “When the store opened, we sold out everything the first day. We had to learn the business from the ground up,” says Peterson.

Now, 20 years later, the shop is three times its original size with three full-time interior designers, including Peterson, and a website. “The tough girls from Michigan” as Peterson dubs them, have certainly come a long way, including a shift to more curated, one-of-a-kind, and higher-priced pieces. “Shelly is the practical one,” says Peterson. “She’ll say there’s no way we can sell an $800 bowl, but I’ll say, ‘Let’s try,’ and we do!”

Two deep blue wing chairs flank a small side table with a brass base and stone top. On the wall hangs a very large, airy abstract painting, with a primarily white (or very pale) background and punches of bright yellow, pink, aqua and green.

“People come to Florida for the water, so we showcase all shades of blues, and we always have fresh flowers. They are the heart of a home.” — Lisa Peterson

While Peterson’s interior design projects vary in style according to her clients’ desires, the shop conveys her preference for white, blues, and greens; wicker and rattan; stripes; and bold, colorful art and pillows. She believes a room is successful when “you feel like yourself when you are in it. You can let out a big ahhh and sink into the environment.”

Peter Fasano wallpaper, a LEE sofa, and Ralph Lauren chairs mix with antiques to create a sophisticated coastal attitude.

When you visit the shop, that’s just what you want to do—curl up in a generous sofa or armchair and put your feet up with one of the shop’s coffee table books in your lap. The only thing missing is perhaps a cocktail.

“People are always saying they want to live in the shop, and one client asked us to put in a bar so he could hang out more!” laughs Peterson. Perhaps a nearby tenant will vacate and Pineapples, Palms, Cocktails, Etc. will debut. The talented and tough Michigan girls would certainly be able to pull it off with style and humor.
